TXU/Current Communication rolling out fiber in Dallas
August 19, 2007
By Rocky Ahmann, President of InDallas.net
This has the potential to be amazing news! If your a Dallas
resident, listen up. TXU is the power provider for most of DFW. In
order to read the meters and respond to power outages faster, TXU is
building out a fiber network in Dallas. Currently, its in Lake
Highlands, the M-streets, UpTown and Highland Park and it will
gradually be moving north.
They intend to deliver internet connections via Broadband over Power
Lines (BPL.) From what I have been able to gather, they intend on
delivering the triple play which consists of television, phone and
internet. They are still developing the technology and its not yet
available in Dallas. In theory, this means that you would plug a
modem into your electrical outlet and bam....you have internet, phone
and TV access.
This is significant because this would introduce another competitor
into the predominant duopoly currently held by the telcos (AT&T and
Verizon) and the cable providers (Time Warner.) Competition is a
good thing.
In my opinion, this is the biggest news to hit residential service
since dsl was introduced 10 years ago.
Stay tuned for further developments...... |
